The Department for Language Teaching organizes and conducts a course in Bulgarian language for foreigners under the Ordinance on the state requirements for admission of students to higher education institutions of the Republic of Bulgaria, adopted with а Decree of the Council of Ministers No. 79 of 05/09/2000. The language course includes two semesters with a total number of teaching hours 800. At the end of the course, candidates take a written and oral exam in front of an exam committee for level of Bulgarian language proficiency B2. The course is held in person from October 1 of each calendar year and lasts 9 calendar months. It is desirable that applicants have an A2 level of English or Russian.

Documents for issuing a “D” visa necessary for foreigners studying Bulgarian at a Bulgarian University:

Original and copy of a diploma for secondary/higher education and application with grades with official translation, with certification and legalization;

Original and copy of a document issued by a competent authority in the respective country, which certify the applicant’s right to continue their education in higher education institutions with an official translation with certification and legalization. This document is not required if a higher education diploma is presented.
The documents from items 4 and 5 must be legalized, translated and certified in accordance with the provisions of international agreements between the Republic of Bulgaria and the country in which they were issued.

For citizens within the European Union a “D” visa is not required. They present documents under items 1, 2, 3 and 4 (without certification and legalization)

Annual tuition fee: EUR 3 000 (EUR 1 500 per semester)
The annual fee for foreigners with dual citizenship, one of which is Bulgarian, is 1 500 euros (750 euros per semester). In this case, a document for dual citizenship is to be presented.
Those who have completed the course and acquired a B2 level of Bulgarian language proficiency can apply for bachelor's and master's programs at a Bulgarian university of their choice, apply for a job, for Bulgarian citizenship and other activities related to the requirements of a B2 level certificate.
